You Are Going To Die Soon (Life Is Short, Part II)

You are going to die soon, you will live a few moments and then fade away.

Life is short. Don’t get mad at me, I didn’t say it. The brother of Jesus said it…among others. You are going to die soon, you will live a few moments and then fade away.

The greek word is “atmis”. Just a vapor.

atmis

vapor

smoke

mist

breath

Sometimes we need perspective. We need to step back and view our lives from a distance, from another angle. You are not the center of the universe. You are not that important. You are dust. Some skin and bones, frail and temporary.

Jesus told us to not bother with storing up treasures that moths and rust will destroy but instead to store up treasures in heaven, treasuring the Kingdom of Heaven more than the temporary pleasures we encounter on our short journey.

This truth has been chipping away at me for a few seasons now. After much thought and meditation I think there are two things to do about it:

repent

risk

Turn away from whatever you treasure, value, or invest in more than Jesus and His kingdom. Trust in Him more than you trust your money, job, relationships, possessions. Turn to a kingdom of justice and love. One that continues after your body vanishes away.

Then risk. Be willing to step out of the line of conformity. Be strong and courageous and live a life full of faithful risk.

  • Risk failing.
  • Risk looking foolish.
  • Risk your reputation.
  • Risk your comfort.
  • Risk failing.

Let the kingdom move and breath through your actions and words.

You are going to die soon. Go forth into the world, where apathy and half-heartedness, delusion, & anxiety are dominant. Live a life that echoes for eternity.
